Red Maple "Ivan Grozny" (Swamp, Soft Maple)
Soft Maple "Ivan Grozny" (Red Maple) - Acer rubrum.
One of the few maple species that tolerate excessive moisture and even stagnant water. Its largest specimens in nature are found in marshy areas in the eastern regions of North America.
An ornamental tree up to 20 m tall with a large tent-shaped crown. The bark of the trunk is dark grey, flaky, young shoots are olive-green, sometimes reddish. The leaves are three- to five-lobed, up to 10 cm, reddish-green when unfolding. In summer: dark green on top, bare, shiny, and glaucous or whitish below, on red petioles.
In autumn, they acquire an amazing colour: the upper side becomes orange or from red to purple, and the lower side is pinkish-silver. Red, less often yellowish flowers on long peduncles in few-flowered inflorescences bloom much earlier than the leaves appear. The flowers are unique due to the stamens and pistils protruding far from the perianth. The flowering period lasts 7-13 days.
Shade-tolerant. Unpretentious to soils, but demanding of their humidity, as well as air humidity. Smoke-resistant, develops well in urban conditions. Reproduced by seeds. Grows quickly. In Estonia, it blooms from the age of 7, annually (from the end of April to the beginning of May). It bears fruit from the age of 9, the fruits ripen in early June. High winter hardiness. The seeds do not have a dormant period and retain their germination for no more than a month. Sown immediately after collection, they sprout in 15 days. Laboratory germination is 85%, ground - 75%. Seed planting depth: 4-5 cm.
Decorative throughout the growing season. A valuable park tree that can be successfully used in single, group and alley plantings, when decorating ponds. In culture since 1650.
Agricultural technology.
Maple prefers bright places, is demanding of moisture, but undemanding to soils - ordinary garden soil will do. Seeds require long stratification at a temperature of +3+5°C (up to 3.5 months). To stimulate germination, seeds are soaked before sowing for 24-72 hours in hydrogen peroxide. In late April - early May, hatched seeds are sown in beds and sealed to a depth of 3-4 cm. Maple seeds germinate within 15-20 days, and in the first year of life, shoots reach a height of 40-80 cm.
Care consists of weeding, loosening and watering, in hot weather it is necessary to shade young plants from the sun. Transplantation to a permanent place is carried out at the age of one to three years. The watering rate during the dry season is 15 liters per plant. Dry and diseased branches are systematically removed from maples. The root collar of young maple seedlings should be covered with spruce branches or dry leaves in severe winters.
